elmt gentle exfoliating solution review

READING MORE NOW
I have been pushing myself to read more and speak up more recently. Reading more is easy because I have always loved reading, just that I have gotten lazy over the years especially since I started working. So if you have any good books to share, don't be afraid to share with me via email! Speaking up more is a little harder because I was somehow trained to lock this trait away when I was younger (I used to be a very noisy girl haha). But I'm gonna do it, just like how I am going to do my review now.

INGREDIENT LIST

Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Water, GlycerinButylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Trehalose, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract, *Lactic Acid, *Glycolic AcidPanthenolAllantoin

Bolded are the good/star ingredients in the product whereas underlined are those flagged as 4 & above under 'Safety index' in by EWG. Safety index ranges from 1-9 and the lower the number means the less hazardous. Those with an asterisk (*) are more likely to cause acne or irritate skin than those without.

You can read other product reviews containing the ingredients by clicking on them in the ingredient list above.

Note: This is free of paraben, sulphate, alcohol, silicone and EU allergen, is fungal acne-safe and has minimal ingredients.

YAS, THE GOOD ONES
Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract is a natural ingredient that is used for its potent antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits. Blueberry contains several types of antioxidants (known as polyphenolics) that are not only healthy for our body when eaten but also for our skin when applied via skincare products.

Glycerin can help keep the skin hydrated and keep the overactive oil glands under control.

Butylene Glycol and Panthenol are both powerful moisturisers. Hence this could potentially be a lifesaver for those of you with extremely dry skin!

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate is a dipotassium salt of Glycyrrhizic Acid. It is normally used as a flavouring agent and a skin conditioning agent as it has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Trehalose is a sugar found in plants, fungi and invertebrate animals, normally used in beauty products as a flavouring agent and moisturiser. It has antioxidant powers and can help retain the skin's moisture that it would otherwise lose. Sounds awesome for dry skin people and those who want to reduce ageing signs!

Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid are both anti-ageing ingredients. They are both a kind of AHA so they can also act as a pH buffer i.e. to help adjust our skin's acidity. Not just that, they can also promote skin peeling (exfoliation) and re-growth which is why they are frequently used in anti-ageing products.

Then, we have Allantoin. An ingredient that aims to improve dry and rough skin as it provides our skin with intensive moisture. Being a skin conditioner, it is also known for its ability to soothe irritated skin and protect our skin from external irritants and dirt.

NAH, THE BAD ONES
For sensitive skin beauty lovers, Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid may potentially irritate your skin if it is at a concentration too high. However, seeing that its position in the ingredient list above is quite low, indicating that its concentration here is not too high, so I don't think it should be causing you to have any concern. I would still recommend patch testing (I always do) before applying it to your whole face.

There are currently four products under this brand. In this picture are the Advanced Calming Solution (read review here) and the Gentle Exfoliating Solution (reviewed in this post). The other two (not in the picture) are Skin Illuminating Solution and Skin Activating Solution.

HEARD OF ELMT?
If you have read my last review (read it here), you've found out that elmt is a new brand just born in the year 2021. Pronounced as "element", the brand focuses on creating well-formulated products with thoughtful ingredients. I am a fan by the time I see its packaging and the ingredient list. The minimalistic feature of this brand is what makes it stand out so much to me. Let's dive in deep into how the product works and how-to-use, shall we?

GIVING US THE SYNERGY
This solution contains AHA and Vitamin C, which means it can help exfoliate the skin. To help balance the exfoliating properties, the elmt research team added a super berry complex made up of 49.02% blueberry and raspberry extracts which are rich in antioxidants. This can help reduce inflammation and irritation (thanks to super berry complex), while also promoting cell turnover (power of AHA + Vitamin C). Isn't this synergy super thoughtful and amazing?

Pouring it out on my palm before patting it onto my skin.

BERRY SPECIAL SMELL
The smell is much heavier than the elmt Advanced Calming Solution. It smells heavily of blueberry, which is a rather calming smell if you ask me hehe. Like the calming solution, its solution is colourless and very watery. It gets absorbed by the skin very quickly, leaving almost no trace behind when it's all dried down. I also like that it's very lightweight, making it a good base below multiple layers of other skincare products even under hot and humid weather.

It looks and feels just like water. Except that it has a strong berry smell.

HOW TO USE
After the cleansing step, pour a nickel size of the solution on your palm. Then gently pat the solution onto your skin. Want to keep your hands clean? No problem. Pour it on a cotton pad instead and gently sweep it over your face and neck. You can use it either in the morning or at night to tone and prep skin for the upcoming skincare steps. If you're looking for stronger exfoliative care, follow up with AHA or BHA products (for example, this Quad Active Boosting Essence from By Wishtrend).

The bottle came sealed like this when I first opened it.

MY SAY IS
I like how simple the ingredient list is. Because of the effort put in by the elmt team, this Gentle Exfoliating Solution is indeed very gentle. Unlike the By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water this does not sting my skin at all when I have some minor breaks on the skin. As a strong beauty advocate for regular exfoliation, I highly recommend getting this as your toner if you are afraid of putting more highly concentrated AHA/BHA products on your face.
