|REVIEW| Real Barrier Aqua Soothing Ampoule Mask

That stained finger is a sign of hope.

I VOTED
I wrote this post on the most historic day of Malaysia ever, 9th of May. That's why you will see in some of the pictures below that one of my fingers is stained with an indelible bluish purple ink. It's not from the mask, neither it's from work. It's from my performance of duty as a 'rakyat' (it means citizen in Malay) of Malaysia. So, I hope you don't mind! HAHA! I needed something to distract my mind from being anxious waiting for the results, here comes a review!

YAS, THE GOOD ONES
Butylene Glycol, Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium HyaluronateCeramide 3 and Panthenol are all powerful moisturisers whereas Glycerin can help keep the skin hydrated and keep the overactive oil glands under control. Hence this mask could potentially be a life saver for those of you with extremely dry skin!

Madecassoside is one of the main bioactive compounds in the plant extract Centella Asiatica. It is an antioxidant by itself but one study showed that even a small amount of it (0.1%), when used with vitamin C, has great antioxidant benefit when applied to skin. It is also non-sensitising and can help revitalise our skin’s surface.

Centella Asiatica Extract is known for its skin-calming properties. Mainly found in shady and damp areas in many different parts of the world, Centella (a.k.a. tiger grass because wounded tigers were often seen rolling in it to heal their wounds) is a small plant that grows up to around six inches in height. Also called the “miracle elixirs of life”, researchers have found that Centella Asiatica Extract facilitates the healing of cuts and burns as it can promote collagen production and inhibit inflammation which results in scarring.

Let's tear open the mask and have a look.

YAS, THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate is a dipotassium salt of Glycyrrhizic Acid. It is normally used as a flavouring agent and a skin conditioning agent as it as anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Then, we have Allantoin. An ingredient that aims to improve dry and rough skin as it provides our skin with intensive moisture. Being a skin conditioner, it is also known for its ability to soothe irritated skin and protect our skin from external irritants and dirt.

Promotes Wound Healing: Panthenol, Madecassoside, Centella Asiatica Extract, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid
Anti-Aging: Ceramide 3

NAH, THE BAD ONES
I like being able to skip this part. Skincarisma has not highlighted anything bad at all from this ingredient list! Now, let's see how it actually does!

It looks a little like hydrogel mask and it comes with plenty of serum!

NOT EXACTLY DRIPPING
When I first held this mask in my hand, I could tell that it must have come with a lot of liquid serum. My feeling had been proved to be true. The mask was soaked in so much serum that it was hard to even hold it in place for the camera (too slippery!). I was afraid that it would drip everywhere (and I was taking photo of it on my brother's bed, shhh, don't tell him!) but luckily it didn't. It seems like the mask material was able to hold all the liquid really well.

Putting it on and smoothening it out.

I HAVE NO IDEA
At first I thought it is a hydrogel mask. Because it looks very smooth and slippery. But it isn't. On closer inspection, it kind of looks like a very high quality cotton sheet mask. There's no information on the mask itself. Even on the ATOPALM Real Barrier's website it only mentioned that the mask is a black sheet enriched with Bamboo Charcoal. The mask felt very comfortable on my face and has a rather good fit. It also manages to keep the mask solution from evaporating into the air.

The mask has a nice fit, although I do wish the nose area is a little longer to cover my whole nose.

HOW TO USE
Always wash your face and apply some toner before putting on a mask. This is to ensure you get rid of dirt that you don't want being pushed into your pores. Next, unfold the mask and flatten it on your skin. Make sure to even out all fold lines to prevent the formation of ugly fold lines on your face later. Keep the mask on for around 10 to 20 minutes (recommended time) before removing it. After that, just pat in the remaining essence and voila, you're done!

OMG can you see how wet the mask is??

DURING THE 'ON' TIME
The mask isn't as cooling as some other masks I've tried. It felt a little wet on my face and I was worried during the whole 20 minutes I had it on that it was going to drip or wet my shirt's collar. But fortunately, it stayed on without dripping. I managed to walk around and watch TV with it on. I detected a strong lavender scent when I first opened up the mask packet. I like the smell of lavender so it wasn't an issue for me. The smell wasn't that detectable when I had the mask on.

Wow, my skin is looking good! A little 'perasan' (that means vain in Malay) there huh, HAHA!

REMOVAL TIME
When removing the mask at the 20th minute, the mask is still soaked in essence. This is a good sign as that means it will not dry out our skin easily and reverse whatever benefits it just gave. However, I did find the essence to be a little sticky on my skin after it has dried down. I can still feel the stickiness even after an hour later. At this point, I've decided to wash off the essence and put on my favourite moisturiser to lock in the moisture I just gained.

Look how much essence it still has in the mask!

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
I actually like the temporary results that this mask gave. The fact that it has a strong lavender smell that fades when the mask is on my face and has no fragrance in it are two other big plus points. That's the three most important things I look for in every mask and this one managed to deliver them all. The price is also considered reasonable for its quality at USD16 for 5 packs (USD3.20 per piece, around RM13 per piece). It is awesome as a quick pick-me-up!
