|REVIEW| Dermabell Perilla Premium Modeling Mask: Super Cooling

HAVE YOU HEARD OF PERILLA?
No I haven't. Not until recently. After watching a YouTube video on how to cool down your skin using modelling mask, I've been thinking about getting one to play with. Then I discovered Dermabell, which carries three different variants of modelling masks: Perilla, Propolis and Rose. I knew I wanted  to try Perilla the moment I saw it because 1) I've honestly not seen any skincare that has this ingredient and 2) it aims to calm sensitive skin, just something my skin needs!

Dermabell Perilla Premium Modeling Mask - RM136.55 per box (5 masks)

DERMABELL?
Dermabell is a Korean brand. But why Dermabell? Derma means skin in ancient Greek while bell is, well, 🔔 haha. What they are trying to convey with the brand is that they want to serve as a reminder that our skin needs care. They focus on producing natural and scientifically formulated professional cosmetics, symbolised by an earthy brown colour scheme, with gold symbolising an advanced way of skincare. Now, shall we get into the mask itself?

p.s. It is also the only brand that carries Perilla Gel Masks!

You can read other product reviews containing the ingredients by clicking on them in the ingredient list above.

Note: This is free of paraben, sulphate, alcohol, silicone and EU allergen.

Each set contains one Modeling Gel (Step 1), Magic Powder (Step 2) and one plastic tray.

YAS THE GOOD ONES
Glycerin can help keep the skin hydrated and keep the overactive oil glands under control while Butylene Glycol and Sodium Hyaluronate are both powerful moisturisers. Hence this could potentially be a life saver for those of you with extremely dry skin!

Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract is good for fighting acne, skin brightening and calming the skin. It can also diminish the appearance of under-eye dark circles, discolouration and even age spots as well as acting as a powerful antioxidant to protect the skin from environmental stressors and balance oil.

Everyone here knows I'm a big fan of Centella Asiatica Extract. I'm always up for anything that has centella in it because I just love its skin-calming properties! Mainly found in shady and damp areas in many different parts of the world, Centella (a.k.a. tiger grass because wounded tigers were often seen rolling in it to heal their wounds) is a small plant that grows up to around six inches in height. Also called the “miracle elixirs of life”, researchers have found that Centella Asiatica Extract facilitates the healing of cuts and burns as it can promote collagen production and inhibit inflammation which results in scarring.

Step 1 (50g).

YAS THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract is a rich source of epigallocatechin gallate, which is one of the most powerful antioxidants available. Moreover, Green Tea Extract is a good anti-inflammatory agent. It can help reduce skin inflammation (go away acnes!) and inhibit the action of collagenase (an enzyme that breaks down collagen).

Used by renowned physician Hua Tuo, Perilla is a herb with history dating back to the Han Dynasty. It is commonly used as a Chinese medicinal herb, is known to regulate qi ("气")and also demonstrates excellent anti-bacterial qualities. When used in skincare (like its Perilla Frutescens Extract and Perilla Frutescens Leaf Extract in here), it can help reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, calm damaged skin and reduce skin sensitivity.

Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Leaf Extract has antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It helps fight acne and other skin infections.

Which looks like this in the very sturdy plastic tray. It was almost flowing out while I took this picture!

YAS THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract is used as a medicinal herb, dye and cooking ingredient. The petals, pollen and stems are rich in triterpenoid esters (an anti-inflammatory), antioxidants and carotenoids, which is good for calming down the skin and acne!

It contains Titanium Dioxide too, which has the ability to deflect and scatter the skin-damaging UV rays to keep our skin protected. But you still need to wear a proper sunscreen before you head under the sun!

Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 derivatives best known for its skin brightening properties. It can reduce pigmentation as it prevents melanin from migrating to the epidermis. With this, this product is able to help bring out the glow and give the dull skin a good makeover.  Not just that, it is also good as an anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing ingredient (read this article if you want to know more)! What's best about it is that it helps stabilise vitamin C and shows enhanced effects when used with vitamin C.

Step 2 (5g).

YAS THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
Madecassoside is one of the main bioactive compounds in the plant extract Centella Asiatica. It is an antioxidant by itself but one study showed that even a small amount of it (0.1%), when used with vitamin C, has great antioxidant benefit when applied to skin. It is also non-sensitising and can help revitalise our skin’s surface.

If you are constantly battling with acne, you should get to know Melaleuca Alternifaolia (Tea Tree) Extract because it can become a great friend of yours. It has the ability to dry out acnes and help soothe inflammation.

We all know Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, a.k.a. Aloe Vera is very famous for its hydrating properties. Containing Auxin and Gibberellins, Aloe Vera is a pro in promoting wound healing (it treats minor burn like a queen). It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help bring down skin inflammation, which is why it has been very used as an ingredient in acne products.

The powder (step 2) is in!
Gentle reminder: don't pour this under the fan because the powder would fly everywhere.

NAH THE BAD ONE
Other than fragrance, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil may potentially irritate sensitive skin if its concentration is too high. However, seeing that it is not the case here (position in the list above is low, indicating that its concentration here is not too high), I don't think it should be causing you to have any concern. I would still recommend patch testing (I always do) before applying it to your whole face.

The small instruction card.

HOW TO USE
It came with a small instruction card in English to help me understand how to use the modelling mask. Thanks to that, I managed to get the mask to work despite being an inexperienced first time user. So don't worry too much about trying out a modelling mask, they've got your back! You just have to pour in the step 1 and 2 packets in sequence (like what I did up there), mix it using the plastic spatula that comes with the mask, put it on your face before it sets and voilà~ you just enjoyed a modelling mask yourself!

After 30 seconds, it's all mixed up and ready to go on to my face!

WOW, THAT'S COOL!
According to Dermabell, Step 1 contains 44.5g of essence while Step 2 contains 3.5g. Of a total of 55g (50g in Step 1 + 5g in Step 2), 48g (44.5g + 3.5g) of the mask is made up of essence. That means 87% of the mask is filled with essence meant for long lasting hydration! Not just that, they also have High Temperature Velocity Steam Technology incorporated, which makes use of a custom mixing pot to evenly heat up raw materials in the shortest time possible, preventing excess loss of essence.

The mask is unbelievably cooling! It has a 36.5 cooling system which ensures that the composite is instantly cooled to the optimum temperature of 36.5 for the human body,

HAHA it looks super bumpy! I've gotta practise doing it a little more quickly.

ONE PIECE!
Well, I was too slow in applying the mask. It ended up looking all bumpy on my face and I was very worried that it wouldn't come off in one piece when the 20-minute timer is up. But no, it came off in one piece and my worry was totally pointless! I was genuinely surprised! Just make sure you don't leave one spot isolated on its own when you apply, getting it all connected is the key! Hehe, now I'm an even bigger fan of modelling mask!

It still feels very cooling on the skin even after 20 minutes. I was very reluctant to take it off haha!

It came off nicely in just one piece!

MY SKIN LOVES IT
Here comes the before and after picture!

My skin is less red and my pores are definitely less prominent!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
With the mask contents all sealed in packets, we can easily bring this around with us when we travel. It would be the perfect mask to calm down our skin when there is a sudden change in weather and environment that puts stress on our skin, causing sensitivity and dehydration. Imagine a quick cooling mask that adapts to your face shape and doesn't need to be cooled in the fridge beforehand! 😍 It also adheres super well to my skin even though I was sitting up the whole time!

JUST GET IT ALREADY
If you have sensitive skin, damaged skin barrier or are acne-prone, the Perilla Premium Modeling Mask would be a good start for modelling masks.
