|REVIEW| Sam & Sean Haters & Lovers Ghassoul Clay Mask

LONG TIME
It's been so long since I last reviewed a clay mask. The last one I did on Innisfree's Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask was more than a year ago! Okay, that's if you don't count the Nada Soda the Pore Care Pack, a bubble clay mask I got from Jolse and wrote a review in September last year. Even that one was roughly 8 months ago, also the time I started my job as an auditor in one of the big fours. Can somebody slow down the hands of time ah? LOL.

THAT ASIDE
I bet you have not heard of Sam & Sean Beauty Project before until now. It's a Korean brand which was started in 2015 by two persons, yes you guessed it right, Sam and Sean. They have two lines of products, the Trouble Hater and the Whitening Lover, which stem from the interesting background story where Sam refuses to date girls with troubled skin while Sean prefers girls with bright skin. This Sam & Sean Ghassoul Clay Mask is part of the Trouble Hater Line.

The ingredient list is on the back of the box.

I like the matte external design of this clay mask!

YAS, THE GOOD ONES
Moroccan Lava Clay is also also known as Rhassoul Clay or Ghassoul Clay, hence the name of this clay mask. It is mined from the Atlas Mountains in Eastern Morocco. As an extraordinarily mineral-rich clay, it normally used to treat dehydrated, sensitive skin and enlarged pores as it can remove sebum, dead skin cells and impurities from the skin. It is also said to be able to help build and strengthen our skin elasticity.

Glycerin can help keep the skin hydrated and keep the overactive oil glands under control.

Kaolin is absorbent so it is frequently used in clay mask to suck up excess oils. This allows it to help balance our skin's oil production if used over a period of time. If you have ever taken some clay mask  made with Kaolin and massage between your fingers, you would feel that it is a little rough. This is due to the crystals in it, which in turn makes Kaolin an excellent but gentle exfoliant. With long term use, it can help tone and tighten our skin!

Butylene Glycol and Panthenol are both powerful moisturisers. Hence those of you with dry skin can use this without worrying that it will dry out your skin too much!

The clay mask is sand grey in colour.

YAS, THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract is commonly used in skincare products to help relieve inflammatory skin conditions and calm sensitive skin. It has the ability to provide antioxidant protection to our skin and it's also good for dry skin as it can soothe, moisturize and inhibit the growth of bacteria (Die acne bacteria! Die!).

If you are constantly battling with acne, you should get to know Melaleuca Alternifaolia (Tea Tree) Extract because it can become a great friend of yours. It has the ability to dry out acnes and help soothe inflammation. This fits nicely into this Trouble Hater Ghassoul Clay Mask!

Centella Asiatica Extract is known for its skin-calming properties. You'd know how much of a fan I am if you have been following my Purito reviews. Mainly found in shady and damp areas in many different parts of the world, Centella (a.k.a. tiger grass because wounded tigers were often seen rolling in it to heal their wounds) is a small plant that grows up to around six inches in height. Also called the “miracle elixirs of life”, researchers have found that Centella Asiatica Extract facilitates the healing of cuts and burns as it can promote collagen production and inhibit inflammation which results in scarring.

YAS, THE GOOD ONES (contd.)
We all know Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, i.e. Aloe Vera is very famous for its hydrating properties. Containing Auxin and Gibberellins, Aloe Vera is a pro in promoting wound healing (it treats minor burn like a queen). It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help bring down skin inflammation, which is why it has been very used as an ingredient in acne products.

Then, we have Allantoin. An ingredient that aims to improve dry and rough skin as it provides our skin with intensive moisture. Being a skin conditioner, it is also known for its ability to soothe irritated skin and protect our skin from external irritants and dirt.

Acne-Fighting: Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Extract
Promotes Wound Healing: Panthenol, Centella Asiatica Extract

NAH, THE BAD ONES
Phenoxyethanol can potentially cause skin and lung irritation so if you know that your skin has not dealt well with Phenoxyethanol in the past, do skip this! If you have oily skin, Stearic Acid and Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter can potentially clog pores. The good smell of this comes from the fragrance it contains. Wouldn't say it is a heavy smell but it certainly covers the pungent smell that a clay mask normally carries.

It comes with a protectant lid.

This is how much I have left after almost a year. It gave me around 20-25 uses so far.

HOW TO USE
After cleansing my face, I put this on for 10 minutes (recommended time is 5 to 10 minutes), avoiding my eyes and mouth. When using a clay mask, I would usually try to cover as much of my under eye area as possible because I heard this can help reduce puffiness. My puffy eye areas need some serious help! I even cover up my eyebrows as I tend to get some small pimples at the area. Let it draw out all the dirts from my skin!

Follow me: Follow

Cleaning up my skin before using the mask.

Used a rubber brush to pick up some of the product and 'dot' it on my skin.

Using another brush to slowly spread it out.

FREQUENCY AND CAUTIONS
This can be used 1-3 times a week but depending on your skin condition, you can use it more or less often. For me, I only use it once every two weeks because my skin less become less oily lately due to extended period spent in the air-conditioned room. Also, since this is a clay mask, you may have to keep checking your face during use because once you see a crack, you have to wash it off. This prevents the mask from absorbing the moisture it just delivered to the skin.

Covered my whole face!

THE CHARM?
There are a few things that I love about this mask. Firstly, it contains various natural minerals to help soften the skin and this, I can attest to. My face has never felt so soft after a mask and we are talking about a clay mask! It also doesn't dry my skin out (because of the ingredients I highlighted above). I would even say my face looks more moisturised every time after using the mask and I’m really happy about this.

A close up.

WHITE CAST? NO!
The fact that it smells better than other clay masks I've tried already makes me fall in love with it. When I found out that it does not leave my face stained greyish white like what Innisfree's Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask would leave me, man, I just love it even more. However, the downside is that it doesn’t seem to draw out dirt as well as the Innisfree one, which almost countered all the good it has LOL. It is also quite difficult to spread as the mask just doesn’t want to stay in one spot.

10 minutes is up! Let's clean it off.

FINAL SAY
Overall I don't think I will repurchase this. I like how it smells and I love the soft and supple skin it gives me. It probably also keeps my skin oilless in the next 2-3 hours. But I feel that I need something that works better at drawing out dirt, something stronger. For me, 2-3 hours of effectiveness just isn't worth it, although this is a super affordable one with its volume. Guess I still need to learn about more clay masks to find the perfect one for my skin!

My skin tone looks more even after the mask! But nothing major noted other than that.
