Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask review

INSECURITY BRAGS
Talking about a pore clay mask makes me feel nervous. Because the only way I can show you how great/bad a pore clay mask is, is by showing you my own pores (and be embarrassed by it). I don't think my pores are as huge as some I've seen or terribly dirty, but insecurity is my best friend. He is always ready to nag me on some trivial matter, especially when it comes to my skin. So, you've been warned! If you proceed to click "read more", or if you are already looking at the full post, brace yourself for some close-ups of my skin.

Finally I'm back with a mask review. After reviewing all the COSRX products, I decided it's time to give my Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask some credits. It's been serving me for eight months now and it's demanding for its turn on Yanrula. So, here it is!

WHITE CAST IS REAL!
Also, I didn't write that title to misguide you or to lure you in. I'm telling the truth. This mask does leave a white cast and I was taken aback by it. Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask is intended for pore cleansing and blackhead removal. But, to my surprise, it has temporarily whitened my face! At first I thought I had not washed off everything. But after vigorously rubbing my face with water a few times, the whitening effect still remained. Honestly, I'm not upset by the effect. In fact, I actually quite like it! Note: I also cleaned my face using Bioderma Sensibio H2O and my Cleansing Research Wash Cleansing Foam to make sure really nothing is left behind.

If you're worried about the whitening effect, don't worry, it fades a while later. The effect is also not noticeable under normal light condition. The main reason I was able to see it is because I have a scary bathroom light. It likes to reveal every single detail on my face. If you're not going to have a photoshoot session with lots of flash, or to be chased by paparazzi with devilish flashing DSLRs, you're safe.

I did it on half of my skin just to prove it to you the effect is not very prominent. Sorry for looking angry haha! Many beauticians and expert beauty gurus have said it might cause fine lines and wrinkles so I tried not to move my face too much when I'm using a clay mask. You know how much I hate those two (and dark circles). And I have a RBF (Resting Bitch Face)!

This is after I washed it off. Heh, my skin is protesting to my night owl routine. *woo* But my point is made, the white cast is not prominent. I shot this using window light without flash. You can also see some whiteheads popping out on the left side of my nose. Whoops! Time to get rid of them! *Be right back!*

NAH THIS IS NOT COOL
If you've been reading my mask review posts, you're probably thinking I keep this in the fridge too. But I don't. I normally use this mask when I shower and can be pretty spontaneous about it. I don't think it'll be very 'convenient' if I keep it in the fridge. Note: fridge and bathroom are not close. The reason I choose to use it while showering is because I can wash off as soon as my 15-minute timer goes off. Hint: recommended time of application is 10-15 minutes. I also prefer to wash using the shower head because this is just so much quicker. Heh, I'm always so impatient and I want everything to be fast! Even when it comes to my skincare routine.

WATER IS HIGH
I didn't think water will be this high on the ingredient list because the mask is quite thick in consistency. But don't worry, it doesn't pull on my skin while I spread. It is just like spreading butter on my skin. Just imagine this is a greyish blue butter that smells like clay.

(Skincarisma)
Water, Kaolin, Titanium Dioxide, Volcanic Ash, Butylene Glycol, Silica, Alcohol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Stearic Acid, Cellulose, Palmitic Acid, Bentonite, Cyclohexasiloxane, Salix Alba Bark Extract, Lactic Acid, Juglans Regia Shell Powder, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Orchid, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Camellia Japonica Leaf Extract, Opuntia Coccinellifera Fruit Extract, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Mannitol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Stearate, Arginine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Zea Mays Starch, Xanthan Gum, Iron Oxides, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Nitrogen.

As a clay mask, the salix alba bark extract in it is great its ability in acne-fighting. The camellia sinensis leaf extract is a soothing ingredient that can provide some skin protection. It is beneficial if you're a oil skin person. But you would have to look out for the potentially pore-blocking stearic acid, palmitic acid and zea mays starch while using this mask. The best way to see if it will react well or badly on your skin is by doing patch test!

Butylene glycol is good for dry skin as it is a powerful moisturiser. However to enable the mask to dry out more quickly after application, alcohol has been added. So if you're particularly prone to irritation caused by alcohol, you may have to look out! Also, although lactic acid is known for its anti-ageing properties, it may irritate your skin if it is on the sensitive end. Just make sure you test it out a little before applying it to your whole face.

PUMP AS HARD AS YOU NEED
Pumping out the Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask is a skill to learn. The pump is very difficult to use. I still very often squeeze more than needed even though I've used it for EIGHT months! I've experimented many ways and discovered the best way is to hold it against my chest and press VERY VERY VERY slowly until I start seeing product oozing out. Then from there I will adjust the amount I need by either pressing harder or just let go.

I love the design of the nozzle. The stopper prevents leakage and makes sure the clay mask doesn't dry off before I manage to finish it. However, when I push it back the clay mask that got stuck in the nozzle will get squeezed out. Look at the picture below and you'll understand what I'm saying! This can get pretty messy especially if you don't clean it up! I normally just pick up the product and use it immediately. Otherwise it's going to dry up and the stopper will lose its purpose!

RUB RUB AWAY
When I bought it from the Innisfree at Sunway Pyramid, the sales assistant told me to lightly rub my face with a cloth after removing the mask. By doing this, the blackheads and whiteheads will just fall off. I was a bit skeptical but the Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask proved itself to me. The AHA and BHA in the mask worked their magic and I can literally see those heads 'float' to the surface of my skin! You saw it on the picture above! All they need is just a single wipe or a light squeeze for the more stubborn ones to completely remove them. But please bear in mind we all have different skin types so what works on me might not work on you.

BEFORE IT CRACKS!
Y'all know I have combination skin. This is also why I bought the Super Volcanic version. It is better than the Jeju Volcanic version in removing oil and dirt. Compare the two pictures below to see how much oil it has sucked up! Clearly mine has dried off a little too much around the lip area and this is not recommended! Contrary to common beliefs, you should never wait till your clay mask cracks! It is not desirable because this is when the clay mask starts absorbing the moisture from your skin instead of delivering moisture to it!

DOOMSDAY FOR DRY SKIN
The Super Volcanic version is also more drying compare to the Jeju Volcanic Version. I can always detect some flaky skin around my nose if I didn't moisturise my face properly in the morning. I definitely don't recommend this for you dry skin peeps! Since my skin is the combination type, I usually will just have it applied on my T-zone and my chin to avoid drying out the rest. Combo skin gang, you know what to do if you want to get this mask for yourself!

All in all, sheet masks are still my favourite! But they can't do what this Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask does, so I still need a good clay mask like this one! Highly recommended for those of you who have oily skin. If a sheet mask can deliver what this little baby delivers, I will not even hesitate for a second to purchase it!
