IT SENT ME TO A DOCTOR
I had the worst experience when I first tried out this rice mask. I broke out everywhere, even on places I don't normally do, like my neck. I had the mask all over my face and my neck area and I regret for not doing a patch test beforehand! I couldn't sleep and I was so bothered with my skin condition I couldn't stand looking at my own reflection in the mirror. Eventually I visited a doctor to have the problem sorted out. All he could do was gave me some pills and told me to wait it out. *sobs* For weeks I didn't want to go anywhere. Thank goodness there was no school so all I did was staying at home and searching on ways to get over it. What I came across saved my life (I made it sound so serious haha!) and my money.
Skinfood Rice Mask Wash Off (RM19 for 100g)
DO NOT MASSAGE ON FIRST USE
According to the instructions, we should massage and then leave it on for 10-15 minutes. The instructions on the tub have confused many people where they thought they should massage for the full 10-15 minutes, which is not necessary! I was lucky to have found some advices from people who can read the Korean instructions and did it correctly from the beginning. But the problem lies here. I should not have massaged. It was the culprit behind all my rampant pimples that pained me for so long!
I wasn't the only one who faced this issue. In fact, this idea came from some other netizens! They apparently got a lot of breakouts too from first using the rice mask. But they later find out if they do not massage, the breakout stops coming back. I experimented cautiously and I can totally attest to that! I was almost ready to stuff it aside and see it past its expiry date before I guiltily throw it away. With the no-massage rule in, I'm now almost finishing my tub and can happily enjoy the temporary whitening effect this wash-off mask brings me!
The pictures are taken at around 8.45am with natural sunlight and the time difference between both pictures is 13 minutes. I tried my best to adjust the settings to keep the saturation similar but just to warn you, they are not entirely the same. The one on the left is before and next to it is after.
I BECAME SNOW WHITE
I've tried my best to capture the whitening effect. It is temporary and short lasting, but good enough for me. Typically for me it lasts 2 to 3 hours if I don't sweat or use other products. I must say I'm genuinely happy with the results! The effect doesn't look like white cast (unlike what the Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask gave me) because it looks very natural on the skin. That's what I really love about it. I use this as a mask every three days after exfoliating with my Cure Nature Aqua Gel (review soon?).
Follow me:
I'M TOO FORGETFUL
This Skinfood Rice Mask Wash Off has lived in my bathroom for seven months now and I just realised I haven't reviewed it! How forgetful am I? But luckily the 100g really lasts a long time. Even with my huge face and generous application once every three days, there is still at least one fifth left. Otherwise I would have nothing to show you here! Another reason I almost forgot is because I only use this while I shower. It's much easier to use a wash-off mask in the shower because I can just wash it off under the shower head when the time is up. That means like the Clay Mousse Mask from Innisfree, I don't keep this in the refrigerator! So here's another mask I don't use cold.
DON'T PLAN TO EAT IT
It doesn't smell like rice. It smells florally with a tinge of salty smell. It's not the kind of smell that will make me want to eat it, but I would love wearing it to sleep. Don't do this unless you think your pillows need some whitening too! After using the mask, my face feels much softer and smoother like baby butts! I don't use it to exfoliate since I don't massage it at all but the rice bran water still manages to work its magic. Skinfood has claimed this to be a food therapy with many nutritive ingredients and the effect is shown through my more moisturised skin after using it. I even find myself looking forward to every mask session with this Skinfood Rice Wash Off Mask despite it being a wash off mask!
I tend to put more of it on areas where I have pigmentation and my dark circles, hoping that it will brighten them up even if it's temporary.
RICE AND SHINE
There is no rice grain in the mask. Instead, the grains look plastic-y. From the description and ingredient list below, it is obvious that the ingredient that Skinfood wants to highlight is the rice bran water. So don't expect to see rice if you buy this mask!
Mask description & ingredient list:
A wash-off mask that transforms skin into a pure and soft texture, and contains rice bran water.
(Skincarisma)
Water, cetyl ethylhexanoate, caprylic/ capric triglyceride, cyclomethicone, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, propylene glycol, stearic acid, polysorbate 80, hydrogenated jojoba oil, butylene glycol, oryza sativa (rice) bran water, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, dimethicone, sorbitan stearate, triethanolamine, carbomer, sucrose cocoate, sodium acrylates copolymer, tocopheryl acetate, disodium edta, methylparaben, imidazolidinyl urea, butylparaben, parfum.
According to Skincarisma, both glycerin and propylene glycol are great for dry skin as they are powerfully moisturising. However, if you have oily skin, I'll highly encourage you to do a patch test (so you won't be getting surprise pimples like me!) as stearic acid and tocopheryl acetate can potentially block pores and cause acne issues.
Before spreading it out.
Look at the transparent grains in the white creamy liquid, which I'm guessing is the rice bran water.
LOW MELTING POINT?
The mask is very easy to use and it spreads easily across my skin. I might occasionally get it in my hair while using this because it transfers very easily. That's why I prefer using it in the shower too! Also, the mask melts after having it on for a while. This melting effect will be especially prominent if you're taking a hot shower or if you live in a hot weather like Malaysia's (which is where I am)! But it shouldn't be a problem since it doesn't melt to the point where it starts to drip. Still okay if you plan to use it while lying down on the couch watching your favourite Netflix TV Series (mine is Stranger Things, what's yours?)!
RECOMMEND BUT NOT REPURCHASING
To be honest, I don't plan to repurchase the mask. After all I'm still not a fan of wash-off masks even though I do quite enjoy this one. At least it has managed to make me look forward to using it! Anyway, there are many sheet masks that could give similar whitening effect and is much more convenient for someone lazy (like me) to use. I would however recommend this if you are looking for a whitening/brightening mask that doesn't leave your skin dry afterwards! Please make sure you wash it off thoroughly without leaving behind any residue. Otherwise even the no-massage rule can't save you from having breakouts!

Thank you Georgia, it is indeed an interesting one! Maybe you can start with sheet masks if you've decided to give one a go! :D You'll fall in love with them! x
Deleteawesome review! one question: why does massaging in d mask leads to breakouts?
ReplyDeleteHello Fuyuki! My one theory which I thought makes the most sense is when I was massaging, I pushed some of the mask particles in to my pores HAHAHA and I didn't manage to clean them off my skin properly while washing off. So the particles got stuck, block the pores and eventually cause pimples HAHAH.
DeleteNice post!
