benton snail bee high content essence review

IT'S FROM ALTHEA
I don't know if you remember but I mentioned that I bought Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence when I did a review on Althea.kr. So today let's finally review this elegant-looking essence!  I got it for free during the buy one free one promotion this March 2017 and it is because I was curious what a product with snail secretion filtrate and bee venom will do to my skin, which comes under the category, sensitive combination.

Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence (RM58.30 for 60ML)

IT SPEAKS ENGLISH
The bottle came packaged in a brown kraft paper box. On the box the ingredient list and the instructions are all written in English, making it easy for those of us who can't comprehend the Hanguk Characters. Pulling the bottle out, the bottle itself sure looks elegant to me. It looks like dark frosted glass but it is actually made of some sort of plastic material which is very sturdy. The bottle managed to make it through my clumsy days as it didn't break when I accidentally dropped it on the floor. 😂

Here on this side of the box is the ingredient list and a caution notice.

INGREDIENT LIST

Snail Secretion Filtrate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Arbutin, Human Oligopeptide-1 (EGF), Bee Venom, Plantago Asiatica Extract, Laminaria Digita Extract, Diospyros Kaki (Japanese Persimmon) Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (White Willow) Bark Extract, Ulmus Campestris, Bacillus Ferment, Azelaic Acid, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, *Butylene Glycol, Beta-Glucan, Betaine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Adenosine, Panthenol, Allantoin, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Usnea Barbata Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Arginine
Note: Bolded are the star ingredients in the product whereas underlined are those flagged as 3 & above under 'Safety index'. Safety index ranges from 1-9 and the lower the number means the less hazardous. Those with asterisks (*) are more likely to cause acne than those without.

Although with 90% snail secretion filtrate, it smells nothing like one. I've used plenty of snail masks and cream before but none of them smells similar to this one. I actually think the aloe vera smell in this Benton essence is much stronger with a tinge of an unrecognisable smell, of which I'm placing my bet on it being the bee venom.

NO WATER ON THE LIST
It surprised me when I saw no water on the list. The texture of the essence is almost water-like, although not as runny nor as thin. To properly describe it, I'd say it's a mixture of water and gel (or just like aloe vera gel, if you've used one before), giving it the ability to moisturise our skin while can still be easily absorbed. Taking another look at the list, you may realise that I haven't underlined any ingredient. So this essence should be safe for all skin types, according to CoSDNA as well as the description on the bottle.

More than half way through: I like how the bottle allows me to see how much I have left if I shine some light on it.

THIS CAN(NOT) BRIGHTEN?
With Arbutin and Adenosine both being brightening agents, the Snail Bee High Content Essence is supposed to have the ability to brighten hyperpigmentation. But having used it for five months now, I haven't seen it doing much difference in my acne scars. My skin still looked the same like it was before I started using this essence. Do note that I only use this essence in the morning before I put on sunscreen and I'm more than half way through the bottle right now.

WHEN TO USE
For me I'm only using it in the morning, but it can be used during your evening routine as well. Just put on your toner like usual, then pump out some gel and use your index finger to dot it on your skin. After that, spread it out using patting motion to help with absorption while making sure you cover every part of your face. I find that by applying this way, the essence is absorbed much quicker so it reduces waiting time. That's why I love using it in the morning to save time whenever I'm in a hurry!

The pump design makes it very hygienic.

How much one pump gives me. This is enough to spread a thin layer across my face.

Swiped it across my hand. Doesn't it just look watery?

I spread a thin layer on half of my hand.

After patting for 10 seconds.

IT IS NOT STICKY NOR OILY
The only two things I love about it is that it doesn't give a sticky or oily finish and that it hydrates my skin well as it contains the snail secretion which is known its moisturising properties. The reason I'm still keeping it in use and not in the stash drawer is because it replaces two steps in my morning routine, i.e. essence and moisturiser. Having it on, I don't need to add in another moisturiser as it is enough to keep my skin moisturised under Malaysia's weather. This reduces the layers of product I put on hence making it easier for me to survive the 37°C hot weather.

FINAL NOTE
Honestly, I don't want to recommend this. Personally, I thought there is nothing extraordinary about this product and it hasn't shown me any special results which I was looking forward to (reduce pigmentation). Although, if you're looking for some light hydration that will keep your skin fresh all day long, you can give this a thought. It does this part of its job really well and being alcohol and fragrance free makes it even better if your skin is towards the sensitive end.

Back of the bottle is all in Korean. It can last up to 24 months but it reduces to only six months after opening.

  1. It sounds like this product was more promising than it's actual performance. Thanks for sharing your experience with it. I've been tempted to try this essence since I like the Benton Snail Bee High Content Steam Cream but I think I might just skip it based on your non-recommendation :)

    1. HAHA! No problem girl. I think Vitamin C would be a much better choice in terms of fighting pigmentation!
