PINK CLEARLY ISN'T MY FAVOURITE
Last week I went to Botanica Deli to take a look at Rhoto-Mentholatum Malaysia's latest brand, Sugao which is now available at selected Watsons outlets. June, who graciously extended an invitation to me, told me that we would be required to dress up in pink that day. When I first saw the word "PINK" I was like, 'yeah, alright, that shouldn't be an issue, I should have something in the wardrobe.' As I happily slid open the door and scanned my wardrobe, I realised I don't own any pink shirt/dress that's suitable for the event! The only pink I have is a polo T-shirt which would be deemed totally inappropriate. 😭
The one thing that stood out the most: the pink macarons.
I ALMOST CHICKENED OUT
I was thinking about emailing June and telling her I can't make it. But I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's a new brand from Japan and I desperately wanted to learn about it first hand! So I started digging harder to see if I have something CLOSE to pink. Finally I found this skirt, which is peachy orange in colour. Pairing it with a black top, I went to the event. Luckily I did, because I got to befriend Newtide Magazine's (新潮) beauty editor, Jia Yee (such a sweet girl) and learnt so much about Sugao, which draws on naturally sheer lightness and softness in achieving natural beauty.
For your viewing pleasure.
WHAT IS SUGAO?
When I entered the place, the first face I saw was this young and beautiful Japanese model's on the backdrop. Her skin looked vibrant and beautiful yet she looked as if she had no makeup on. Everything of her just shouted airy, natural and, I can't explain why, carefree. I later discovered that "sugao" means bare, natural face in Japanese and this line is specially designed to target young women. So the girl I saw actually perfectly mirrors Sugao's brand image! Sugao's aim is to help us young girls create a soft and light makeup to give the skin's natural beauty a boost.
SUGAO AIR FIT CC CREAM
Zooming in on the top row of tubes. These are the CC Creams (RM69.90 for 25g).
IT LOOKS LIKE SOUFFLÉ
This is Sugao's hero product. It is formulated with Rhoto-patented Air-Fit technology, giving it a light soufflé-like texture. I played with the CC Cream testers when I was at the event. They are really easy to spread and all three versions (revealed below!) go on smooth and even. The Air-Fit technology enables the CC creams to cover pores and uneven skin with just a thin layer of 0.01mm. That's incredibly thin! I like makeup that is thin and lightweight! 😍
WITH SPF AND SEBUM ABSORBING ABILITIES
Not just that, from what I heard during the event, its 4-in-1 formulation equips it with an SPF of 23 and PA of +++. SPF 23 is sadly below my personal minimum requirement for a sunscreen, so I'd still recommend you to use a >SPF 30 underneath, just to be safe. But what I really love about this CC Creams is that they are all free of fragrance and alcohol as well as having the ability to absorb excess sebum effectively. This would make them my perfect makeup base for long hour application, as my T-zone tends to oil up during the day!
From left to right, Moist 02, Smooth 02, Pink Bright Moist 01.
AVAILABLE IN THREE VERSIONS
In case you can't see the small words, it comes in Moist, Smooth and Pink Bright Moist versions (you can see their actual shades in the picture to come). No matter which version, they all promise to leave the skin breathable and brightened with beautiful finish. Each version comes with two soft shades of colours, which they named 01 Pure Natural (lighter) and 02 Pure Ocher (darker). Particularly, the Pink Bright Moist version aims to give the skin a slightly pinkish tone (the name says it all LOL), which will end up creating a soft-focus makeup effect.

Can you see the differences? 😃
SUGAO CHEEK & LIP
Zooming in on the cheek and lip section, I just realised all their positions are wrong! LOL! From left to right: Brilliant Pink, Active Orange and Natural Red.
USE ONE PRODUCT FOR TWO PURPOSES
After we've put on CC Cream, for some of us, we'd go on and do our cheeks. Three must be Sugao's lucky number because this Cheek and Lip also comes in three shades, i.e. Natural Red, Active Orange and Brilliant Pink. I've applied a little of each on my hand in the picture below for you to see! You must be wondering why it's called cheek and lip. Its mousse form gives it a 2-in-1 usage, which means it can be used on both cheeks and lips, so you can easily create a matching look!

How To Use
Just use your finger to scoop an adequate amount then dot it on your cheek very lightly. Using another finger (which wasn't used to scoop up the mousse), gently blend out the mousse in circular motion. Since our goal here is to create a natural look, always remember to start small and slowly build it up to prevent overdoing it. You can also use it on your lips for brighter and healthier-looking lips.

How all three shades look in action.
SUGAO LIP TINT
It is transparent! I'm holding the shade Sweet Pink (they mixed up the position of Sweet Pink and Juicy Red 🤦🏻♀️).
WILL IT EVEN SHOW?
If you're not really into those shades of the Lip & Cheek or are worried they may not be long lasting enough, it's okay. Sugao also offers lip tints in three shades (the number three again!), namely, Juicy Red, Sweet Pink and Apricot Pink. When I first saw the three lip tints, I couldn't believe they're actually lip tints because they are all transparent! I've never seen a transparent one before (forgive me I'm a frog under the well HAHA). My first thought was, can these even show up on my lips?
Sugao Lip Tint (RM45.90 for 4.7ML)
TURNS OUT IT SHOWS
On the spot, we were each given a bag of products so that we can use them to create the most Japanese makeup look. The winner would be walking away with a Pandora bracelet, which is really pretty (no I didn't snap a picture LOL and no my makeup skill really CMI)! I was eager to try the lip tint, so I ripped open the package (I was given Sweet Pink), took out the doe-foot applicator and, with a skeptical face, went over my lips with it. I was instantly amazed. Despite its water-like texture, the colour showed up really pretty on my lips, giving them a plump yet natural finish.
p.s. CMI means cannot make it, just in case haha.
I'm holding Apricot Pink here.
Once you're satisfied with your look, the last step is either a setting mist or for me, a translucent powder. Sugao Chiffon Powder contains fluffy, light and finely grained powder that goes on without leaving a sign. It wraps the skin gently with a feeling of lightness and transparency just like you're wearing a chiffon veil. As a powder, it can absorb sebum effectively and reduce the oil that seep through our pores, hence able to keep our skin fresh all day long.
It also comes with a puff so you don't have to purchase one separately.
TRYING MY BEST TO WAIT
Not just that, Sugao also claims that this powder can brighten our skin and balance uneven skin tone, thus leaving our skin feeling flawless. Honestly, I haven't tried it out myself because if you read my previous reviews, you'd know I've already have two translucent powders (W.Lab & Althea) which are both open and in use. So I'm not going to open this up until I finish one of those, I'm trying to be a good girl! But what this baby does and the other two don't is that it provides sunscreen protection of SPF 23 and PA+++. Can you tell how tempted I am to just ripped open the package and use this instead??
FINAL NOTE
I actually really love the Cheek & Lip because it feels super smooth on my skin and the colour is just too pretty when it goes onto my skin. It gives a natural finish (not the one you get using powder blush!) and doesn't look like I've put on any blush. If you can only buy one product from Sugao, I'd highly recommend the Cheek & Lip. Its mousse texture is just one of its kind, very different from what I've seen in the market. What about you? What's your favourite blush? Let me know in the comment section below!

I was invited to the launch party by Watsons Malaysia, thank you June! As usual, all thoughts are mine and 100% honest with all pictures taken by me (I apologise for the quality this time because I used a higher ISO to accommodate the lighting). Please read my disclaimer here.

ReplyDeleteI agree! I love the packaging too!
Deletewow so pink, i like it. Btw yes, one of the thing that excite me whenever i join event is to meet new people, make friends.
ReplyDeleteYAAAA! Me too! I like making new friends during event haha.
DeleteI actually bought Sugao cc cream from Japan back in 2015 without knowing anything about it! Lucky purchase. But the wrong product placement, I can't bear that. I would rearrange them all.
ReplyDeleteI only realised it when I was choosing the pictures to put here. Haha, too late!
DeleteOh my gosh everything looks so cute! I really like the sound of all their products, but I'm especially intrigued by the cheek & lip for its interesting texture and it's multipurpose function (perfect for traveling!). The chiffon powder sounds amazing too, especially since it has SPF! I can see it being great for touching up on sunscreen when you're wearing makeup!
